2011 DISNEY SHOWCASE

This past holiday week, the u16 Boys White team continued their winning ways with a convincing triumph at the 2011 Disney Showcase in Orlando FL. The tournament is the nation’s top annual showcase and attracts hundreds of teams from both the US and Canada.
The team consist of GK’s Lee Owen, and Ben Segulijic
Defenders; Kevin Davis, Sammy Ganeles, Will Gittings, Octavio Basso, Ryan Gallagher
Midfiellders; Christian Henry, Zach Morant, Ely Masson, Harry Heffernan, Ryan Roche
Forwards; Tom Young, Aiden Murray, Kieran Bracken, Ben Ovetsky, Steven Pinski.

Over four consecutive days, the u16 Boys posted a 3-0-1 record including a thoroughly dominating 5-0 triumph in the championship final against Florida Rush.

Tournament Game Summary

NYSC 95/96 White vs Vestavia Steamers . In a tightly contested first half, NYSC controlled most of the play and had the best chances to score. But on a slick field, a counter attacking pass out wide skipped over an NYSC defender and led to a “bullet” ball delivered from outside the box that beat the keeper. Trailing 1-0, NYSC came out strong in the second half, pressuring the ball relentlessly and Space Coast was pushed back on their heels. The attacking style of play, and smooth, precise passing in the final third found a Midfielder alone in behind the defenders 10 yards out for a well placed finish on goal. The tying goal elevated the intensity even more which led to more attacking pressure on the local team. NYSC found the back of the net with only minutes to play from a poorly cleared set piece; which a midfielder was able to strike from 18 yards out for the game winning goal.

NYSC 95/96 White vs Solar Chelsea. After a ragged first half by both teams, NYSC dominated this Dallas-based squad for stretches of the second half but failed to score. The inconclusive nature of play justified the 0-0 result.

NYSC 95/96 White vs Space Coast . The third and final match of group play would decide the group winner and tournament finalist. The only result that would qualify the U16 boys White team for the finals would be a win, Space Coast had the tie breaker, so a tie would have put the team in the 3rd place match. In a game of two evenly matched squads, NYSC once again found themselves trailing 1-0 at the half. Once gain, the team came out with passion and pressure to start the second half. The team was able to build up from the back with precision; leading to dominant possession play for the majority of the second half. The team was able to breakthrough and tie the game with a well-executed free kick from 20 yards out leading to a rebound goal. Needing the go ahead goal to advance the U16 Boys White team played with heart and determination to create the goal. With 10 minutes remaining a NYSC player was fouled 30 yards out and once a again a well executed set piece led to a header that got past the Space Coast keeper. NYSC was able to close the game out with solid play and not allowing the tying goal; the win propelling them to the finals.

NYSC 95/96 vs Florida Rush. From the first minute on, the result of the match was never in doubt. With pressure on top, NYSC continually disrupted the opposition’s play resulting in a series of turnovers. The ball rarely left the Rush side of the field as NYSC moved the ball at will. At the ten minute mark, NYSC was able to combine down the right side of the field to the endline resulting in a perfectly crossed ball for an even better first time volley for the opening goal. Minutes later , the second goal came from a 1v1 with the goal keeper and the NYSC Forward calmly defining on goal. Going into halftime the scoreline was a precarious 2-0 lead. NYSC came out of the break even more determined to find the killer goal and break the will of the opponent. Within the first two minutes of the second half, the White team was a able to build up down the left side of the field for a cross leading to a redirected ball into the Rush goal. At that point the outcome was decided and two nice goals later; created by positive attacking soccer led to a convincing 5-0 NYSC championship win.

May 30, 2011. From the fertile farmlands of Amish Country, to the hot and steamy conditions of Philadelphia’s western suburbs, one thing remained constant at the prestigious FC Delco Players Cup: The winning ways of the New York Soccer Club.

In only its second year as an established club, NYSC’s U15 Boys White squad won the Elite Group and U15 Boys Blue took the Premier. The U14 Boys went undefeated in the Elite Group but where denied a trip to the finals due to tournament tiebreaker rules. And NYSC’s youngest entrant in this 700-team field, the U12 Boys, reached the Elite Group semifinals.

In the U15 Elite Group, NYSC White dominated possession of the game from start to finish and came away with a convincing 4-0 victory against Ottawa Fury. Malik Cameron and Christian Henry struck twice each for NYSC in the championship match.

In the U15 Premier Group final the story was much the same, with technical superiority and possession-play leading the U15 Blue to a 3-0 thumping of Ottawa-South United Force. Charlie Livingston, Joaquin Delmar and Angelo Materia registered goals for the Blues.

Jeff Bookman, coach the NYSC White and the club’s Technical Director said, “We are a club that believes in player development. We believe you can actually be more competitive by developing a group of players over time rather than the more common practice of ‘cut and recruit’. This early NYSC club success is proof that the European youth academy soccer model can work in the U.S.”

NYSC currently has six boys and two girls teams all participating in the unique training environment the club provides. Technical, tactical, fitness and psychological teaching are all components of the club’s developmental philosophy. “When a player’s potential is maximized winning is the natural result,” added coach Bookman.

New York Soccer Club is pleased to announce the list of player placements with colleges for the coming fall. This is our first group of players that have been eligible for college placement and we are proud of their achievements. Working with our Director of College Placement, Milton Gooding, the players have been fortunate to find colleges that met their own academic and sporting goals. 93% (13) of our 14 seniors received offers to date!

The following U18s have committed to playing soccer at the following D1 and D3 colleges:

Jason Adler Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Travis Blair Wheaton College
Sam Cannon Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Josh Henderson-Jardim Kenyon College
Dylan Howie Johns Hopkins University
Sandy Leavy Lafayette College
Chris Livingston Virginia Military Institute
Kyle Murphy Clemson University
Thomas Murtagh Union College
Gustavo Trinidad Sage College

We would also like to congratulate the following boys who received some soccer offers and interest as well, but have opted to attend their “dream schools” instead:

Henry Bareiss University of Miami
Tommy Heffernan Harvard University
Kyle Spinks Northwestern University

We offer a late congratulations to Shamar Hyatt, a current U18 playing with NYSC again this spring, who graduated last year. He accepted an offer to play at University of Bridgeport a year ago and is doing very well there.

Team Manager Lydia Howie tells us that all the players and families are very excited about their decisions and attribute their good fortune to their long-standing commitment to soccer and New York Soccer Club, including U18 Coach Ken Pollard, Coach Milton Gooding and Mark and Lisa Heffernan, who formed the team in 2009. We are pleased that all of our U18s are seeing their college and/or soccer dreams come true!

Club structure is a key factor in Player Development. How does your Club measure up to meet the expectation of players Continue reading →

Reproduced from SoccerAmerica

By Christian Lavers

While the coach interacting with the players on a daily basis is the key influencer in their individual development, there are many structural factors surrounding the club that will impact the likelihood of a player reaching his or her potential.

Some factors are more obvious than others, but having an understanding of how club structure impacts growth is helpful both: (i) as a club director considering how to build your organization; and (ii) as a parent looking to make long-term decisions about where your child should play. Some examples:

* Controlled Coaching Turnover: In general, it is very difficult for a coach to remain with the same group of players for more than four years. Over time, the messages from the coach tend to get stale (since they’ve been heard so frequently), and the opinions of the coach about individual players (and of the players about the coach) tend to become rigid and inflexible. For this reason, controlled changes over time within the coaching staff working with a team are important.

At the pivotal skill development age groups of U12-U14, where players change physically and mentally very quickly, it is advisable that the coaching staff changes somewhat even after two years. When you see the same coaches staying with the same group of players for six-seven years, (which many of us have done at one time or another), it is usually a sign of a very special relationship between the coach and a group of players, or a lack of depth in the club’s coaching pool.

* Coaching Development: Just as coaches should be in the “business” of developing soccer players, clubs should be in the “business” of developing soccer coaches. Clubs that take seriously the need to develop their own coaches tend to be better at developing soccer players.

Clubs can help develop coaches in many ways, for example: (i) using younger coaches as assistants with more experienced coaches; (ii) having senior coaches regularly observe and assess sessions run by younger coaches; or (iii) having a required continuing education program for all coaches within the club.

* A “Program” Structure: The model for building a successful soccer club in the 1990s involved having one coach for one team, where, within this team, the coach was king and almost entirely independent. This model has become outdated.

Now, the most enlightened clubs are structuring their teams and staff into “programs” that cover multiple age groups. This structure means that one staff of coaches is responsible for several teams over multiple age groups (U12-U14, U15-U18, etc.). This structure: (i) ensures developmental continuity over time; (ii) allows coaches to specialize in coaching different age groups; (iii) provides multiple coaching perspectives at each age group; and (iv) allows for more roster flexibility and movement of players between teams.

* Training and Roster Flexibility: The clubs that are most serious about player development have a player-centered, not a team-centered, approach when it comes to where players train and play. This is most obvious by looking at the number of players who are playing or training with older players within the club.

The opportunity to train with older players, and for the most special players the ability to regularly “play-up,” is a key factor in individual development. In the best environments, this means that there is regular movement of players between various age groups and levels in training and in games. (Of course the leagues that the teams participate in must have rules allowing this type of roster flexibility in competition in order to allow playing-up.)

* A Developmental Base and History: There are some very “successful” clubs in this country that are very good at recruiting entire teams from other clubs at older age groups, putting them in the same jersey, and then winning games. This “recruitment” model is very different than a “developmental” model.

While it is a reality that the best clubs will attract better players over time, and that this attraction tends to occur more at older age groups (U14 and up) when the disparity in development between clubs begins to show, the core of any successful youth team should consist of “homegrown” players.

A club with (i) a vibrant youth program, potentially even a recreational base at U6-U10, and (ii) a history of successful players with 8-plus years in the club, is typically better at developing players than those without these elements. (On a similar note, clubs with competitive adult or U20/U23 teams provide good opportunities for “senior” youth players — U17 and U18 — to be challenged by training or competing with men and women.)

* A Professional Management Approach: Successful businesses are led by individuals who are hired for their expertise in a particular field and then are given the freedom to make decisions.

Successful soccer clubs are led by coaches hired for their developmental expertise, and then given the freedom to make developmental decisions without undue outside influence. While the involvement of parental expertise can be very positive in certain aspects of club management (financial management and controls, facility development, etc.), when untrained parents or parental boards become involved in decisions regarding team structure, roster selection, and league/competition participation and scheduling, bad decisions from a developmental perspective are almost always eventually made.

At the best clubs, the governing body of the organization hires the Director of Coaching, allows him or her to structure the program based on their own expertise, and then holds him or her accountable for the developmental outcomes of players and coaches.

(Christian Lavers is the Executive Vice President at US Club Soccer. He holds the highest coaching licenses in the United States – the USSF “A” License, the USSF “Y” License, and the NSCAA Premier Diploma, and is the USSDA Director and ECNL Director with FC Milwaukee Nationals in Wisconsin.)
